USA: Omius has used state-of-the-art robotics and artificial intelligence into garments to create a next generation jacket that automatically changes its thermal protection to the wearer’s fluctuating body temperature during changeable weather or varied physical activity. It has already carried out extensive testing of the jacket with the help of cyclists, runners, skiers and other athletes. Synchronizing with the wearer’s body, the nature-inspired jacket features a ventilation system based on plants using microscopic holes on their leaves called stomata, to regulate their temperature. The company has incorporated slitted vents into the fabric which run up and down the chest and upper back of the garment. An in-built processor and integrated hardware electronically opens and closes the vents as the wearer’s body temperature rises or drops. This is detected by a sensor that measures the temperature of the body, as well as that of the surrounding area. The wearer can open and close the vents manually, which helps the system to learn their temperature preferences. It uses state-of-the-art soft mechanisms and AI, to change the properties of a garment by modifying its structure macroscopically.
