Tirupur: Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA) has praised the Economic Survey 2016-17 tabled in Parliament by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for giving emphasis on apparel and leather sectors. TEA President Raja M Shanmugham thanked the Government for introducing separate chapters for apparel and leather sectors in the survey.

This unique move initiated by the Government is a commendable job, said TEA President. He also endorsed the positive impact of the demonetization stated in the Economic Survey and hoped there would be elimination of unethical business from the trade.

He further mentioned that the constraints expressed for India to lag behind competitors in the apparel sector are real and current and there is a need to remove those bottlenecks enlisted through a focused approach.

TEA President appealed to expedite the FTA with US and EU and PTA UK considering the exports and employment. Labour law reforms should be addressed immediately by the Government. He also expressed his concern about the delay in the implementation of the scheme and said there is a need to minimize the time taken between the policy announcements and the passage of benefits to the industry. Absence of skilled and trained labourers in the industry is an important reason for the lack of competitiveness of Indian industry, feels Shanmugham.
