Mumbai: India’s Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has decided to set up ‘Khadi Gaon’ in five villages in each of the states across the country. Vanej Village in Banaskantha District in North Gujarat is set to become the first village to have Khadi Gaon.
The move is aimed to boost employment at rural locations and uplift the khadi sector in the country. Basic training and infrastructure would be provided by KVIC to those individuals who are interested in becoming self-reliant through khadi spinning and other cottage industries. About 25-26 lakh people get direct employment from khadi and village industries, which is likely to reach a turnover of Rs. 1,900-2,000 crore by the end of this fiscal.
